(July 14, 2012, Harlem, New York) Harlem Hebrew Language Academy Charter School was approved for a charter by the New York State Board of Regents on June 19, 2012 and will open in Community School District (CSD) 3, serving the Upper Westside and Harlem communities of Manhattan in the Fall of 2013.

Harlem Charter School Parents PAC (HCSP-PAC) is excited to welcome The Harlem Hebrew Language Academy Charter School to the line-up of outstanding Harlem charter schools operating in Harlem.

HCSP-PAC plans to help promote Harlem Hebrew Language Academy Charter School to Harlem parents with school age children in Harlem.

Harlem Hebrew Language Academy Charter School will serve as an excellent educational opportunity for all of the children of Harlem. I strongly believe Harlem Hebrew opening in Harlem, represents the continued mutually beneficial partnership between African-Americans and members of the Jewish faith that was established decades ago during the civil rights era of the 1960's based on shared values of equal opportunity and social justice, said Thomas Lopez-Pierre, Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Harlem Charter School Parents PAC (HCSP-PAC).

Harlem Hebrew will be a free public charter school serving 156 students in grades K-1 its first school year (September 2013). Each year, the school will grow by one grade until by the fifth year of its charter it will have 450 students in grades K-5.

MySpace Brags Spur Gang Busts of Crips, Bloods

Crips and Bloods drug dealers who terrorized a Manhattan housing project and boasted of their gang ties on MySpace were busted Wednesday, authorities said.
The brazen gang - part of the "M-Set Grant Houses" crew - was taken down for selling cocaine, crack and heroin in the Grant Houses in Morningside Heights and nearby schools, investigators said.

Eleven gangsters were indicted yesterday on gun and drug charges.
The MySpace pages, including profiles of "Gotti" and "Buddha," showed members flashing gang signs. One of the pages even included a newspaper article about a 2005 police investigation into the "M-Set" Crips.
"They were using the site to brag about their gang affiliations," said a law enforcement source.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said the investigation, dubbed "Grant Denied," began six months ago.
NYPD and District Attorney detectives seized 190 grams of crack, 60 grams of cocaine and 51 glassines of heroin, said Lt. Keith Laughran of the Bronx gang squad. The drugs had a street value of about $20,000, a source said.

Slithering in Harlem

A four-foot-long snake found slithering down a steamy Harlem sidewalk this morning had pedestrians in a tizzy -- until cops came and removed it.
The snake -- identified as a boa constrictor -- was found across the street from Central Park after a passerby stumbled upon it at about 8:30 a.m., police said.
The reptile was outside the entrance to a laundromat at 410 W. 110 St. It was taken by police officers to a nearby NYC Center for Animal Care and Control shelter in upper Manhattan.
The snake, a female, is believed to be a pet that either got away or was abandoned by its owner, authorities said.
No one was hurt.
Boa constrictors, although not poisonous, are known to bite.
The large serpents are native to Central and South America and are generally brown and gray in color. They can be as large as 14 feet in length

Hip-hop and high styles on West 125th Street

Whoops, hair it is! The look is big hair, tight tees and often short, slithery or full skirts and high “fly” heels at Harl3m Ink’s fourth annual Summer Stage Fashion Show, held last Sunday at the Harlem State Office Building’s Plaza.
It all works when the models are young and pretty. However, these looks are not for fuller figures, even though there were plus-size models in the show.

The sun was hot, but depending upon your spot, the afternoon’s cool breezes were enjoyable. In between fashion sets, some star rappers put the word out! Founded by Rev. Al Sharpton’s daughters Ashley and Dominique Sharpton, Harl3m Inc. produced a fabulous variety show! When the DJ played Michael Jackson’s “I Wanna Rock With You,” the already cheering audience burst into song in memory of MJ.
Hosted by Antonique Smith, star of Searchlight Pictures’ “Notorious,” and celebrity stylist Wouri Vice, this new age-inspired fashion show featured 19 segments. For their audience mix, there were styles for everyone and labeled scenes mixed with fashion and drama. Look out for designers Deranie Henderson and Styles by Chimere.

Some great hairstyles were by Jacee Allmond of Pizazz Salon, 333 Lenox Avenue, NYC. For work, there were men’s and women’s chic pants and skirt suits and outfits. For night, the gowns with tulle touches and bare jumpsuits were sexy.

Featuring 60 hand-selected models and 10 talented designers, the show was very entertaining.“We lost great legends, but don’t tell your children who they can’t be. Tell them what and who they can be. This show just shows you that all young people are not out here selling dope. Many are trying to build great lives,” preached Rev. Al Sharpton. His daughters Dominique and Ashley received keys to Harlem.

Historically, fashion has been a pivotal part of African-American culture, especially in Harlem. Over the past 10 years, Harlem has become home to a variety of big brand names and smaller entrepreneurial brands. Harl3m Ink utilizes Harlem’s fashion cache and molds the style that defines today’s urban market.

For Harlem residents, fashion fans from surrounding boroughs and stylists from the tristate area, Harl3m Ink’s fourth Summer Stage show was made possible by District Leader Teresa Freeman-Timmons, Rev. Al Sharpton and the continued support of Harl3m Ink’s staff, designers and models.

Vanessa and Angela Simmons received an award from Sister to Sister for their outstanding presence as role models in the community. Good Show!

Joyous prayers for Harlem sailor William Rios

Hero seaman William Rios got an emotional welcome home at his Harlem church Sunday.
He entered the Second St.John Baptist Church to strains of "Victory is Mine" and other hymns from a purple-robed choir, and broke down in tears as he sat in the front pew with his wife, Sherry, and 16-year-old son, William Jr.
"We thank you Lord for this homecoming because it could have been another way," said the Rev. Robert Jones. "We could have been preparing a funeral."
Rios thanked parishioners for their prayers after his battle with Somali pirates halfway around the globe.
"I'm glad I'm back home," Rios, 41, said to cheers and shouts of "Hallelujah!" "Your prayers came through."
Rios regaled the church with tales of his dramatic ordeal at sea. He said he heard gunshots as the pirates boarded the ship.
"They've got AK-47s. We don't have nothing. All we have is knives," he said.
When the four pirates found out it was an American ship, "They clapped their hands and said, 'More money, more money,'" he said.
Unable to sail the disabled ship, the pirates feigned surrender, and Capt. Richard Phillips helped them lower a rescue boat into the water. Its engine failed, and Rios and engineer John Cronan volunteered to bring the pirates a lifeboat.
The pirates didn't shoot - but they refused to let Phillips swim back to the rescue boat where Rios and Cronan were waiting, shouting, "No captain!" and "Three million dollars!"
Navy SEALs gunned down Phillips' captors three days later. The freed captain returned unhurt to his home in Vermont this weekend.
Rios said he would stay in New York long enough to see his daughter, Nikki, 22, graduate from SUNY Purchase next month before heading back out to sea.
His wife is hoping he looks for a gig that's a little safer.
"He can go back on the ship but he's not going back into those waters," said Sherry Rios, 42. "We're trying to get him to do a cruise ship."

It will be displaying my neighborhood in New York City, HARLEM WORLD!! Uptown baby, Uptown! Everyone check it out tonight so we can have something to talk about every Tuesday morning. The show is almost similar to MTV's The Hills in its format - as this cast consists of aspiring writers, fashionistas, activists, and actresses. of course as with any reality show there will be drama. I mean, why else would we watch if there wasn't any?!

Robbers Take $200K From Check-Cashing Business

Two masked and armed men stole about $200,000 from a Harlem check cashing operation yesterday morning. The Daily News reports that the suspect, "disguised by black ski masks and hoods and packing handguns," "blitzed a 53-year-old employee as she opened RiteCheck at 2602 Frederick Douglass Boulevard. Witness said, "I thought maybe it was something when they came out with hoods. They walked out. They got in the car. That was it." The employee was not injured, and RiteCheck president Joseph Coleman told the News they would probably beef up security at various locations, "It seems to be a necessity in the current economic situation."
