Hey everyone! Today's favorite things Friday feature is the Nook HD. In preparation of our upcoming family vacation, my husband and I have been brainstorming some different ways to keep our daughters (ages 5 and 2) occupied during our flight. Although I have an iPad (which my kids have totally taken over) I plan on using it during our travels. I brought it along during my last trip and it really came in handy so I don't want to share (yes, I reserve the right right to be selfish once in a blue moon). So, we contemplated books, crayons, you know the usual go-to items, but I really didn't want to carry a lot of extra items and I worried about how long it would hold their interests. Also, the thing with crayons is they always end up falling on the floor and rolling under the seats and it's always a hassle. Happens every time we're in the car or when we go out to a restaurant and I'm always up under the seat or the table trying to retrieve them to calm down one of my daughters who's trying to complete a masterpiece (keep in mind that they're artists and they're sensitive about their stuff). #Baduizm
Now, I've been researching this tablet for a while and we finally just decided to give it a try. We purchased it at Barnes and Nobles and it's pretty awesome. It's a 7 in. screen so the size is perfect and it's very lightweight. There are tons of free educational apps and books you can download which is great for me because y'all know I like FREE! In fact, my girls know not to ask for an app if it's not free. Now every once in a while I'll see something worth buying but there are so many free apps out there that I mostly stick to them. Anyway, it has wifi capability and you can download your own movies, pictures and music as well (if I hear 'Rolling in the Deep' one more time though...). You can also purchase these things as well, but again, we try to stick with the free stuff. My favorite downloads have been the free books. The children's books have an audio option that allows you to read along with it which is a great feature for our 5 year old who recently began reading. It's very similar to the Leap Frog to me so I really like that.
The cost is only $129 for an 8GB Nook HD and it has an expandable memory because you can use an SD card. There is also a 16GB option, but we opted for the 8GB and then purchased a 16GB SD card. So we got 24GB in all for $149 as opposed to paying $149 for just 16GB. It's very user friendly (our 2 year old is now a pro) and you can set up multiple user profiles and password protect them so I can have my preferences saved on the device as well. You can also set up parental controls so the kids aren't searching apps/books that aren't kid appropriate. This worked out great this week when I took it to the gym and I was able to read 'Game of Thrones' while on the elliptical. The size was perfect because I normally read on my iPhone when I'm in the gym and the words are very small and I never bring my iPad because it's too big to fit on the machines and carry around but the Nook HD was perfect. The Nook HD cases were $35 at Barnes and Nobles but #aintnobodygottimeforthat. So, I purchased a case for it from my new favorite spot, Five Below. The case is originally for the Kindle Fire but it fit the Nook just fine since they're both 7 in tablets AND it was only $5. Overall, we like it a lot and it's definitely a great price for everything it offers. So, if you're in the market for an affordable tablet, I'd highly recommend the Nook HD.
