Jamaican Police have the man who commandeered CanJet airline flight 918 in custody at this moment. The 174 passengers and eight crew members have all been released and were not harmed. All passengers were Canadian.
"The gunman fired a shot in the boarding bridge as he entered, but no one was hit. He then took an undisclosed number of passengers and crew members hostage before releasing them (passengers), the crew was then held hostage,"Jamaica Information Minister Daryl Vaz said.
The hijacker was described as a "mentally challenged" man in his 20s. The CanJet flight originated from Halifax, Canada, had made a scheduled landing at Sangster International Airport in the Jamaican resort city of Montego Bay and was scheduled to continue on to Santa Clara, Cuba.
The suspect's father and Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding, who flew in by helicopter, were among those who negotiated with the unidentified man before his capture. The country's minister of national security also was at hand.
