Ex-Lover of Queens Woman Arrested for her Murder

The ex-lover of a Queens woman, whose body was found outside a vacant home on Long Island Monday, was arrested today and charged with her murder, police said.

Marvon Jemmott, 35, was arrested at about 2 a.m, at his Rosedale, Queens home by investigators from the Nassau County police department, sources said. It is not clear what led investigators to him.

Jemmott allegedly strangled Jamaica Smith, 36, the mother of his child, sources said.

Smith, a hairdresser, who had moved from Memphis to Queens in June, vanished the day before Thanksgiving after she dropped her daughter Jailyn, 6, off at school at P.S. 156, in Laurelton, Queens. Family reported her missing later that day after she failed to return to pick up her daughter from school, sources said.

Her body was discovered at 9 a.m. on Monday by a meter reader outside an empty home in Uniondale, Long Island, police said.

Jemmott is charged with second-degree murder. Police did not provide a motive for the killing. He is slated to be arraigned in Nassau County court later today.
