Poet's Corner: "Beneath the Earth"

Even the earth beneath
Their feet turned its back
On the Haitians.
Someone told me
They heard the earth cry;
Or was it the wails
Of a hundred thousand souls
Trapped inside?

If the archbishop can die
Did god close his eyes,
Even just to blink?
If a day to god is
A thousand years, a blink
Could be two hundred.

Western imperialists have long
Memories, and the image
Of decapitated French heads
Held in dark hands
Is neither forgotten nor forgiven.

They see Toussaint
In every little black boy
In Haiti, and for centuries
Imperialists sung

Kill them before they grow.
I say,
Kill them before they grow!

But no one shot the sherriff
This time. The sharing
Of abundant resources must
Continue until every child can
Grow up to wear the badge
Of Toussaint with pride.
