FAIR LAWN — A man who allegedly robbed the TD Bank on River Road on Saturday morning was caught just 11 minutes later in Paterson after he crashed a stolen van, police said.

Richard Swindell, 47, of Paterson, went into the bank at 10:38 a.m. and allegedly demanded money from the teller, saying he had a gun and pointing to his coat pocket, Fair Lawn Police Capt. Anthony Serrao said Saturday.

After the teller handed over about $3,300, Swindell allegedly fled to a red Dodge Van he had parked in the bank’s lot, police said.

Bank employees gave police the license plate number and description of the vehicle and a message was sent out to police departments across the state, Serrao said.

Hawthorne police spotted the moving van in their borough and were able to apprehend Swindell after he crashed the vehicle in Paterson. The van was stolen from Paterson on Friday night, police said.

“He was caught only 11 minutes after robbing the bank — it was a great job by the officers,” said Fair Lawn Sgt. Michael Messina.

Bess broke his leg after crashing his car and was brought to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center for treatment, where he remained Saturday under police guard.<

He is charged with robbery, theft and making terrorist threats.

The ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department, and Fair Lawn police, Serrao said.
