Michael Jackson's doctor 'ready' for criminal charges

Michael Jackson's doctor is ready to surrender to the authorities if prosecutors file manslaughter charges, his lawyers have said.

Dr Condrad Murray, who has a practice in Houston, is thought likely to be charged with involuntary manslaughter following the death of Michael Jackson on June 25 last year.

The Los Angeles coroner's office ruled that his death was homicide after forensic tests found the powerful sedative propofol, and at least two other sedatives, in his system.

Dr Murray has admitted administering propofol to Jackson on the day he died to help him sleep but he maintains the amount, 25 milligrams, was small and would not have been fatal.

Dr Murray travelled to Los Angeles at the weekend and spent Tuesday afternoon meeting with his newly assembled team of three lawyers.

The district attorney's office has not said if it will file charges, but defence lawyer Ed Chernoff said Dr Murray is ready for such a move.

"I haven't received any phone call from anybody asking for the doctor to surrender," Mr Chernoff said.

"If we get the call, we'll be happy to."

David Walgren, the Deputy Los Angeles County district attorney handling the case, declined to comment.

In order to prove involuntary manslaughter prosecutors will have to show that Dr Murray was negligent in his care of Jackson.

Under California law the charge carries a maximum sentence of four years. Source
