Pillars of fire lead up
Calvary slopes,
Pinpointing a cross
Marked with the voice
Of the fallen ...
Child or pedestrian,
Fatally struck by whimsy.
Roses intertwined with
Chain links, a vine wrapping
Around a fence, to mark
A transition point;
To bar ghouls from
Desecrating, and prohibit
The spirit from ascending ...
Too soon. Taken too soon.
Teddy bears, gray with grime
And time, hug the cross,
As the child once hugged
The plush toy for comfort.
Commuters and travelers
Regard the memorial with
Swollen eyes, and mothers
Pull their children half a step closer,
And boyfriends squeeze the hand
Of their lover a bit tighter.
