Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino has announced the arrest of a suspect in the hit and run death of 5-year-old Julianne Vega, The New Jersey Newsroom reported.

24-year-old Saleem Wright has been charged with death by motor vehicle, leaving the scene of a fatal accident and endangering an injured victim, said Laurino.

A surrender, coordinated by Wright's attorney, Gerald Saluti and the Reverend Ron Christian was arranged around 2:30 p.m. Friday and Wright, of Irvington, surrendered to detectives from the Prosecutor's Homicide Squad without incident.

Investigators say the A 2005 blue Mercedes Benz CLK convertible that hit Vega was registered to Wright. When it was found at 2:54 a.m. Friday on 7th Avenue and North 11th Street in Newark, it bore visible front end damage.

Vega was struck and killed by Wright as she and her 11-year-old sister crossed the street at Columbian Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Thursday. She was transported to University Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 9:04 p.m.

Judge Michael Petrolle set Wright's bail at $150,000 and he is reportedly being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility.

The investigation is continuing. Witnesses are asked to contact the Newark Police Homicide Squad or the Prosecutor's Office Homicide Squad at 1-877-847-7432.
