Former Newark Fire Dept Employee Pleads Guilty

Eri Smith, a former Newark fire department employee pleaded guilty last week to third-degree theft, tampering with public records and official misconduct for embezzling money that was meant to pay for city permits, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Smith, 41, admitted he pilfered $750 from the fire department by adding his name to money orders from people seeking the permits. Smith instructed applicants to leave the line on the money order where a name is filled in blank and he later placed his name there.

The Newark man will be sentenced at a later date and faces 18 months in prison with a minimum of one year to be served. he must make restitution for the monies he stole and is permanently barred from holding a public job.
