Fayetteville police charged a Fort Bragg soldier with first-degree murder immediately following his release from Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where he had been hospitalized since a failed suicide attempt in May after he allegedly shot and killed his long-time girlfriend in May 2011.
The shooting occurred at the Summertime Apartments Complex off Reilly Road in Fayetteville on May 12. Michael Lloyd Williams and Stephanie Thompson, 24 had been in a seven-year relationship at the time of the shooting. Police say the couple had a history of domestic violence issues.
Williams shot himself in the head in attempt to kill himself. At his court appearance, he was seen wearing a helmet to protect his head. The 47-year-old soldier is attached to the 22nd Aviation Support Battalion, 82nd Combat. Williams, who deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan at least three times, is currently being held at the Cumberland County jail without bail.
