NJPAC Celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, JR.

Newark, NJ  – The New Jersey Performing Arts Center’s annual musical celebration of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. brings together two of today’s most accomplished gospel artists: Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and pianist Richard Smallwood; and singer, songwriter and preacher Tye Tribbett, a best-seller on theBillboard gospel charts. Speaker Rev. Dr. M. William Howard, Jr. of Bethany Baptist Church in Newark will kick off the evening with a stirring address. This celebration of one of the 20th century's most inspiring leaders is made possible by PSEG Foundation and presented in collaboration with the Newark unit of the NAACP.  Additional support comes from Verizon, The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey, Bloomberg, Citi, New Jersey State Council on the Arts and Discover Jersey Arts.

About the Artists:
Richard Smallwood changed the face of gospel music, and is known for his signature “Smallwood Sound,” a fusion of the Gospel, classical, pop and R&B styles he grew up on. The GrammyÓAward winning singer and composer has been honored by the Smithsonian Institution as a “gospel innovator and songwriter”  and he has ministered to presidents and dignitaries at all of D.C.’s halls of fame, including the Smithsonian and the Kennedy Center. An inductee to the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, he has won numerous Stellar and Dove awards as well as a Grammy Award for his production on the Quincy Jones Gospel project, Handel’s Soulful Messiah.
Born in Camden, Tye Tribbett is a New Jersey based gospel hitmaker, as well as a husband, father of two, producer, preacher and business man. Together with the choir he founded, Greater Anointing (G.A.), he toured and performed with some of the biggest stars in the secular world, including Whitney Houston, Faith Hill and Tim MGraw, Luther VanDross and Jill Scott. In recent years, he has turned exclusively to gospel music, having released his fourth album, Fresh, on Axis Music Group/Columbia last year.
Rev. Dr. M. William Howard, Jrleads Newark’s Bethany Baptist Church and Bethany Cares, Inc., a community-development corporation that enhances the church’s outreach capacity, serving families and young people from all walks of life, including those who are incarcerated. Dr. Howard, a graduate of Morehouse and Princeton Theological Seminary, has served on the boards of the National Urban League, The Independent Sector, and The Children’s Defense Fund, is a founding member of the Newark Community Foundation, and is Chair of the Rutgers University Board of Governors.
