U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced the sentencing of a Bayonne businessman convicted of conspiring with then-mayor Dennis Elwell to obtain monies in exchange for Elwell's assistance on real estate deals.

According to federal court documents, Ronald Manzo pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Jose L. Linares in Newark federal court to conspiring with Elwell and others to obtain $10,000 in exchange for the former mayor's future official assistance on real estate deals.

Judge Linares sentenced the 68-year-old businessman to three years probation on the conspiracy charge, as well as one year of probation, with home confinement, including electronic monitoring for violating terms of his probation from a previous criminal conviction. After his probation is served on that charge,Linares tacked on an additional five months of supervised release, which Manzo has already served.

Manzo avoided prison time after cooperating with investigators to shut down Operation Bid Rig, New Jersey's largest corruption sting, which ended with the arrests and prosecution of 46 defendants.
