NYPD & Corrections Officer Arrested Over Cinco de Mayo Weekend; Ex-Cop, Pena Jury Deadlocked in Sex Assault Trial

It was a bad weekend for an NYPD and a NYC Corrections Officer who were arrested on DUI and obstruction charges in two separate incidents early Sunday morning.

Police say NYPD officer Ronald Gonzalez, 41, was arrested after crashing his car into a pole in Brooklyn Heights around 12:30 a.m. Gonzalez, of the 77th Precinct in Crown Heights, refused a Breathalyzer test and was immediately arrested and charged with drunken driving. DCPI officials said Gonzalez has since been suspended from the NYPD.

Two hours later, Corrections Officer David Grant found himself in handcuffs after he refused to comply with orders from police. Officials say Grant was amongst a group of people standing on a street corner in Harlem with a group of people who became rowdy.

Someone at the scene ignored orders from police to disperse and was being arrested when Grant stepped in and interfered with police.  The 30-year-old Corrections Officer was then arrested and charged with obstructing government administration, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

In other news, former NYPD officer Michael Pena, who was convicted of sexually assaulting a woman at gunpoint last year, remains in limbo after the jury deadlocked on two rape charges. The jury did convict the disgraced cop of six counts of predatory sexual assault and first-degree criminal sexual act for sodomizing the 26-year-old Inwood school teacher.

The victim testified that Pena stopped her asking for directions, then pulled a 9MM pistol and forced her into a Bronx apartment where he raped her. Pena, 28, claimed he was intoxicated at the time of the incident and admitted that he sexually attacked the woman but denied any intercourse took place. A resident of the apartment building heard the woman's screams and called police.

Pena, who still faces the possibility of life in prison on the partial conviction, had been on suspension from the NYPD since his arrest. He was terminated immediately following his conviction last Tuesday. Pena joined the department four years ago and was assigned to the 33rd Precinct in Washington Heights.
