Lauryn Hill’s Sentencing For Tax Evasion Delayed

Lauryn Hill was supposed to be sentenced for tax evasion April 22 but according to 4UMF “She appeared in court for sentencing after failing to report $1.8 million in income to the federal government, but U.S. Magistrate Judge Madeline Cox Arleo postponed it saying that Hill has two weeks to pay $504,000 in back taxes. If she does not pay the back taxes before her next court date on Monday, May 6, Hill faces a potential sentence of at least 24 months and up to 30 months of jail time. The South Orange resident and former member of the Fugees, a hip-hop group withWyclef Jean and Pras Michel, admitted last year that she did not file federal tax returns for income she received during 2005, 2006 and 2007.She arrived at the U.S. District Courthouse in Newark minutes before the hearing, elegantly dressed in dark slacks with a long, striped trench coat. Her hair was close cropped.Hill earns the majority of her income from royalties received from her music and movie appearances, authorities said last year. In addition to fronting the Fugees, she also released the 1998 hit solo album, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” which sold more than 10 million copies and netted five Grammy Awards.Last June, Hill was charged with failing to report about $818,000 she earned in 2005; $222,000 in 2006 and $761,000 in 2007. At the time, Hill owned four S corporations: Creations Music, Boogie Tours, L.H. Productions 2001 and Studio 22. Such entities do not pay corporate taxes on earnings, but pass on the tax obligations on income they generate to their shareholders or owners.Hill pleaded guilty a few weeks later. At the time, her attorney Nathan Hochman said the singer intended to pay back the taxes she owed.”
