RAHEEM CLEVELAND

Newark prosecutors celebrated a victory following the conviction of Raheem Cleveland in the 2011 gang-related shooting that left a woman seriously injured and her boyfriend dead.

Cleveland's three-day trial culminated with the Essex County jury convicting him of murder, attempted murder and related weapons offenses after a day and a half of deliberation, said Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray.

Cleveland, 33, of Newark, New Jersey was convicted of the attempted murder of 27-year-old Amina Nobles and the shooting death of 28-year-old Marquise Robinson. Cleveland was wounded in the 2011 shooting on Scheerer Avenue that occurred shortly after he killed Robinson.

According to a police report, on July 5, 2011, Cleveland appeared at a home in Newark where he found Nobles and Robinson. The defendant shot both victims at point blank range as they stood on the front steps of Robinson’s Osborne Terrace home.

Investigators contended that the shooting was gang related and homicide investigators previously identified the murder victim as member of the street gang, the Grape Street Crips. Robinson's rap sheet included at least eight arrests for narcotics and weapons offenses.

Amongst family members mourning the death of Robinson at his funeral were his fellow street gang members, many donned, not traditional funeral black, but their gang colors.

Assistant Prosecutor Romesh Sukhdeo, who tried the case said he believed justice was served with Cleveland, who had been out of prison for less than six months when he shot the victims in 2011, having been convicted of all charges.

Cleveland, 33, of Newark, was a career criminal having previously been convicted of five felonies and racking up 13 arrests throughout his extensive criminal history for everything from drugs and gun charges to assault and jumping bond.

Presiding Judge, Joseph C. Cassini, III, set Clevelands' sentencing date for June 10, 2013.
