'Bonnie & Clyde' Duo Robbed To feed Drug Habit

Cops: 'Bonnie & Clyde' Robbers Had $1K a Day Drug Habit
CLIFTON, N.J. (AP) -- Police say a couple suspected in what are known as the "Bonnie & Clyde'' robberies in north Jersey needed money to fuel a $1,000-a-day heroin habit. Maria Cruz and Leone Rene are suspected of robbing nearly ten stores in Passaic and Bergen counties in the past month. They're charged with two counts of robbery and one count of weapons possession.
During one robbery at Kathy's Grocery on Ackerman Ave. in Clifton, the pair pistol-whipped a store clerk, police said.
Levin and Cruz were arrested Sunday driving an SUV, and had in their possession a handgun, ski masks, and stolen lottery tickets, police said. The pair confessed to robbing two bodegas in Clifton, two in Paterson, one in Woodland Park and two more in Garfield, police said. Charges are pending in the other towns. Their arrests came after a Clifton police officer on his way to work followed a vehicle matching the description of one wanted in earlier robberies.
