Ex-cop nabbed after killing girlfriend, wounding friend

Jerry Bowen is currently in
the custody of the NYPD
A dirty ex-NYPD drug cop is in police custody Monday morning after he allegedly gunned down his girlfriend and wounded her pal inside a Brooklyn condo on Sunday.
Jerry Bowens, 43, who had been considered armed and dangerous by police, was arrested near the 120th Precinct on Staten Island before dawn.
He was later moved to a local hospital for treatment for an injury that he sustained before he arrived at the precinct, a police source said. It was not clear how he was hurt, but the injury was not considered life-threatening, the source said.
Bowens' apprehension was little comfort to the father of Catherine Donofrio, 28, who was slain in the bloody confrontation in Greenpoint.
"He killed my daughter," said John Donofrio, who said his daughter had been studying to take the LSATs and become a lawyer. "She was a very beautiful girl, very smart."
Bowens, who is also married, allegedly hunted down Donofrio about 4:30 p.m. at her best friend's first-floor apartment on Engert Ave. in trendy Greenpoint.
When Donofrio's friend, Melissa Simmons, 28, buzzed Bowens inside, an argument broke out, followed by gunfire.
Sources said Bowens shot Donofrio in the head, then fired at Simmons, grazing her head and hitting her in the arm. Both women were taken to Bellevue Hospital, where Donofrio died on arrival.
Paramedics escorted Simmons from Northpoint Towers, a newly built nine-story building where units sold for $529,000 to $1.15 million. She was able to identify Bowens as the killer, cops said.
"It's a nightmare," said Annie Turchiano, who was Donofrio's godmother.
"She was loving. She was caring - just a wonderful young girl," Turchiano said of Donofrio.
Friends had been concerned about Donofrio's relationship.
"I knew she was dating some crazy guy," said Michael Spizzeri, 28, who worked with Donofrio and Simmons, both secretaries, at a city law firm. "But how could someone do that?"
Cops briefly believed Bowens had bolted to Donofrio's apartment on 70th St. in Bensonhurst after the shootings and barricaded himself inside.
After surrounding the apartment and evacuating neighbors, police determined he wasn't there.
Donofrio's parents, John and Jane Donofrio, who are legally blind, and her 99-year-old grandmother live in the same Bensonhurst building.
