And in Memphis News.........

Health Department studying barge emissions on Mississippi River
By Tom Charlier

Their quarry: barges cruising in the channel connecting the Mississippi River with the harbor facilities of McKellar Lake.
"What we're trying to see is how much of the emissions come through," said Chase, a meteorologist and scientific programmer with Arcadis, a North Carolina firm, as he sat under a tent in front of a computer screen Thursday. "We've got a pretty good wind, so it's going to blow through."
Using a $230,000 federal grant, the Health Department arranged for Arcadis to conduct a study that employs lasers, an infrared camera and other remote-sensing equipment to gauge how much pollution is emitted by tanker barges.
In particular, they're looking for the volatile organic compounds that contribute to the Memphis area's ozone-pollution problem. VOCs, as they're called, react with other pollutants in the presence of sunlight to form ozone, a lung-scarring pollutant that must be more tightly controlled if the Memphis area is to meet the stricter standards planned by the federal government.
