Gaming Revenue Down Sharply in Reno, Lake Tahoe Areas

BY BILL O’DRISCOLL
Gaming revenues fell nearly 21 percent in Washoe County in August from a year earlier, a report today shows, continuing a two-year-long skid even in a month loaded with special events. Gross gaming revenues statewide also slumped again, falling in August by more than 9 percent from August 2008, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board.
Statewide revenues have fallen every month dating back to the end of 2007, further dampening the already-bleak revenue picture for state government, which relies heavily on taxes from gaming revenues.
Within Washoe County, the downturn was consistent in a month loaded with events such as Hot August Nights: Reno proper, down 21.1 percent; Sparks, down 19.6 percent; north shore of Lake Tahoe, down 24.7 percent; and the balance of the county, down 18.6 percent.
In the Carson City-Carson Valley corridor, revenues fell 17.1 percent from August 2008, the report showed. And at the south shore of Lake Tahoe, the slump was even steeper, down 28.9 percent.
