Vanderbilt University Kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month...

with a little Latin flavor!
By Adriana Salinas

The Vanderbilt Association of Hispanic Students kicked off Hispanic Heritage month with some hot new spices at an event called Sabor Latino, meaning "Latin flavor".

From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today, Vanderbilt students took study breaks and enjoyed an endless amount of food that represented Hispanic countries in the Central, Southern and Caribbean parts of the world.

The Mexican and Cuban food was ordered from two different restaurants, while the Colombian and Honduran food was homemade catering. After the buffet of Mexican, Cuban, Columbian and Honduran food, a performance by VIDA: Vanderbilt Latin Dance Group followed.
Amanda Estevez, the cultural co-chair of VAHS helped organized the event along with co-chair Stephanie Baeza.
“Sabor Latino goes back a number of years and is VAHS’ biggest event,” Estevez said. The overall goal of Sabor Latino is to get people interested in Latin culture, and you do not have to be Hispanic to do so.
The success behind Sabor Latino, Estevez said, is that “everyone loves to eat, so introducing people to a new culture through food is great, and something everybody already loves.”
Once everyone’s food settled and VIDA had performed, there was an open dance floor for everyone to show off their skills.
To keep Hispanic Heritage month rolling at 6 p.m. tomorrow, Oct. 12 come learn to salsa and enjoy free food in celebration of Dia de la Raza in the BCC Auditorium, co-sponsored by the Afro-Hispanic Review with VAHS.
At noon on Oct. 16, there will be a lecture in Buttrick 309 by Alfredo Behrens about culture and management in Latin America, co-sponsored by the Center for Latin American Studies and the Owen Latin Business Association.
