Unidas Presents...


Latin@ Pride NYC 2009

In the month of October, Unid@s -The National Latin@ Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Human Rights Organization will be proudly sponsoring New York City’s 1st and only Latin@ Pride 40 years after the Stonewall Riots.
The mission of Unid@s is to create a multi-issue approach for advocacy, education and convening of and for our communities. Guided by economic justice, feminist, anti-racist, environmental, and pro-peace values, Unid@s joins a global effort to transform systems and policies that oppress our communities to create the just and equitable World we know possible.


Unid@s in the Big Apple celebrates both Latino Heritage and Coming Out experiences within our communities. Unid@s in the Big Apple at its 1st year has partnered with community based organizations, leaders, community members, artists, safe spaces to create a week long agenda for the Latin@ LGBT community of New York City.


Unid@s in the Big Apple will kick-off on October 16th, 2009 with It’s Time: Coming Out an event sponsored by HAF (http://www.hafnyc.org/) taking place at Hostos Community College in the Bronx, and CINEMAROSA in Queens. A true citywide event will have events in the boroughs of the Bronx, Queens and Manhattan.
All community educational and cultural events in the New York City are open to the public but limited to first come, first served.

Friday October 16th 2009: It’s Time: Coming Out @ Hostos Community CollegeHispanic AIDS Forum (HAF) has a great program for you this year. From dancing to comedians performing their skits, to coming out stories. Join us in celebrating Coming Out and Latino Heritage month at this event. Sunday October 18th 2009: CINEMAROSA @ Queens Museum of Art

CINEMAROSA -queens only queer film series- presents a special program featuring works by emerging Hispanic/Latin/Latina(o) filmmakers whose works focus on the lives and experiences in being gay, lesbian, and transgender in traditional macho oriented Spanish speaking communities.

Monday October 19th 2009: Ur Colors, Ur PrideKnow your Status! HAF will be providing free confidential HIV Testing and celebrating Ur Colors, Ur Pride. Knowing is better, get tested!

Tuesday October 20th, 2009: Heeled Up @ VLADAJoin us for an unveiling of Heeled Up an beautiful exhibit down by a Puerto Rican artist Carlos N. Molina (http://www.carlosnmolina.com/). Come enjoy these beautifully hand-made miniature high heel shoes. Drinks specials from 6-9pm, bring a friend and mingle with other Latin@ queers.

Wednesday October 21st, 2009: From the Page to the Stage- Poetas & Writers @ BAAD!This evening is a no holds barred celebration of Queer Latin@ poets and writers who experiment with style and breathe life into their words.

The lineup includes: Janis Astor Delvalle, Devon Gallegos, Rigoberto González, Karen Jaime, Mariposa, Ignacio Rivera, Roberto Santiago and Charlie Vázquez.

Thursday October 22nd 2009: Caminos Unidos: Combatiendo la Violencia de Odio en las Comunidades Inmigrantes y LGBTQ @ Make the Road NYC
A bilingual education forum for the Latin@ and LGBT community to learn their rights, share their stories and build community and advocate for themselves. This promises to be a interactive and proactive respond to recent hate crimes occurring within our communities. This is being brought to you by members of the NYCLU, Make the Road, FIERCE, GLOBE & PFLAG.
