VICTORY FOR MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE COALITION
Brooklyn, New York - The Medgar Evers College Coalition for Academic Excellence and Mission Integrity (MEC Coalition) is calling last Tuesday's press conference and public hearing a double victory.
On Tuesday, March 8, 2011 the MEC Coalition held a press conference with the purpose to raise awareness about the nationally reported upon issues faced by faculty, students, and community members at Medgar Evers College (MEC). The press conference was also called to demand a change in leadership at the predominately Black institution of higher learning.
On the steps of city hall, the MEC Coalition charged the current administration with being un-aligned and in conflict with the mission of the college. The MEC Coalition and supporters also addressed significant problems related to MEC's centers, student support services, and academic programs that, they said, need to be resolved immediately.
The press conference preceded a City Council legislative hearing on
Examining the Academic Impact of CUNY's Institutes and Centers on Ethnic Studies (sponsored by the City Council's Higher Education Committee). The hearing's focus was on the political and cultural impact of CUNY centers and institutes on ethnic studies within a university system that services many diverse student groups. It turned into a spirited session when
NYC Council Member Charles Barron, outraged, walked out, stating that the lack of an African American presence on the CUNY panel was racist.
The Hearing - An OverviewCity Council Members heard from the CUNY panel first, which was represented by
Julia Wrigley, Associate University Provost,
Anthony Rini, University Director, and directors from the Dominican Studies Institute, the Center for Puerto Rican Studies, and the Italian American Institute.
At the end of the CUNY panel presentation,
Council MemberYdanis Rodriquez, NYC Chair of the Higher Education Committee, asked university officials whether there were any programs or centers related to CUNY's African American constituency. CUNY panel members responded that they were not aware of any.
Incensed by the response, Barron pointed out that there were in fact two executive directors present at the hearing who represented African American constituents: the Center for Black Literature and the Center for Law and Social Justice. He then demanded to know why there were no African Americans on the CUNY panel. At that point he called the hearing insulting and then dramatically walked out, followed by several other members of the City Council. After the stir,
NYC Council Member Letitia James further highlighted Barron's observation on the panel's lack of representation of African American people. She followed with a series of critical questions related to the process for establishing and removing centers, the responsibilities of center directors, and the funding models for the more than 100 centers and institutes within CUNY.
During the second half of the hearing, others gave public testimony as well. Among them were Dr. Brenda Greene, Executive Director of the Center for Black Literature; Esmeralda Simmons, Director of the Center for Law and Social Justice; Joe Coello, Board Member of the DuBois Bunche Center and the Center for NuLeadership; Kate Rhee Ji Kyung, Director of the Institute for Juvenile Justice Reform and Alternatives at the Center for NuLeadership; and
Gloria Dulan Wilson, journalist and community activist. Select testimony is posted on the MEC Coalition's website and Facebook page.
NYC Council Member Jumaane Williams was unable to attend but issued this statement in advance: "I have grown very concerned that Medgar Evers College may not be standing firm upon the community service ideals in which the college was founded. I stand with the students, faculty, and other elected officials in demanding answers about recent developments and decisions relating to long-standing institutions and faculty."

Boricua Ballin' with Nathan Peavy
Growing up, I would always go to the island during the summer and see my grandparents and family. While visiting I would always catch BSN and National Team games on television. When the opportunity to represent Bayamon and the Puerto Rican National Team arose, it was very special.
I am currently playing in my fourth season in Germany. At the start of my season here, I was stricken with meningitis. I was able to overcome...MORE

Marcus Jackson Cops Plea on Sex Assault, Kidnapping Charges in Charlotte
Jackson's plea means he will spend approximately two years and four months in prison and will have to register as a sex offender upon his release.
Assistant District Attorney Samantha Pendergrass said she offered Jackson a plea deal because the low-level felonies and misdemeanors the Charlotte native was charged with could be punishable by probation for a defendant like Jackson, with no prior criminal record.
Pendergrass said she made a plea offer that would put him in prison versus allowing him to walk away unscathed by his actions.
The 26-year-old former Harding High football player was charged with six felonies and 10 misdemeanors in December 2009 after eight women and two men alleged that Jackson, while in uniform and on duty, sexually assaulted and harassed them.
Here is a Breakdown of Jackson’s Charges:
Four of the victims are Hispanic, and four are African American. One of Jackson's victims stated that Jackson fondled her while conducting a "search" of her person, then forced her boyfriend, who was with her during the "traffic stop," to perform a sexual act while the salacious officer watched. Another victim was stopped and assaulted by Jackson on two separate occasions.
Jackson arrested the couple on resisting arrest charges and both remained jailed for a week. The boyfriend says he lost his job as a result of the bogus arrest. Many of the victims say they feel they were racially profiled and Jackson preyed upon Latinos because he believed they would be less likely to report the assaults.
Charlotte Police Chief Rodney Monroe said the first incident occurred on December 18, 2009 when Jackson - on duty and in uniform - pulled over the 17-year-old victim, then forced her into his car before driving off to another location where he forced her to commit sex acts.
A relative of the victim contacted police and Internal Affairs Division and Sexual Assault Unit began an immediate investigation against Jackson.
Within a week of the first complaints, seven other women came forward accusing the sadistic officer of sexual abuse. One victim stated that Jackson offered to waive her traffic ticket in exchange for oral sex. According to the Charlotte Observer, a warrant indicated that Jackson and the victim "did engage in the sex act."
Within 24 hours of identifying Officer Jackson as the suspect, he was questioned, charged and terminated.
Court documents revealed that before Jackson joined the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police department, he had two arrests for attacking and threatening two females he dated. His first arrest, at age 19, came in May 2003 after the mother of his 15-year-old girlfriend accused Jackson of threatening her daughter.
Jackson, then a student at UNC Charlotte, allegedly told the defendant that she was going to "get hers and catch one," according to the statement her mother wrote while pursuing a restraining order against Jackson.
The mother's complaint further alleged that Jackson tried to hit her daughter with a car and pushed the Harding High School teen into a locker. Jackson was later accused of violating that restraining order, but was found not guilty in August 2003 and had the arrest expunged from his record.
In 2005, while still attending UNCC, Jackson was working at Off Broadway Shoes in Charlotte when his 21-year-old girlfriend sought a restraining order against him alleging that the 5-foot-11-inch, 200-pound student slapped her face, hit her in the back of her head and grabbed her by the face several times, "screaming and yelling."
"He pushed me down in the floor, forcing (me) in (a) walk-in closet," the young woman's complaint read.
The presiding judges in both cases granted the restraining orders, but Jackson was not convicted of a crime in either case. The judges forbade Jackson to contact or go near either victim, and one judge prohibited him from owning or carrying a firearm during the two weeks of the restraining order.
Three years later, in September 2008, Jackson joined the Charlotte police department, and reported to the Eastway Division patrol in east Charlotte. A criminal and civil background check was conducted, and revealed Jackson's 2003 domestic complaint, but officials were not aware of the 2005 complaint.
Charlotte Attorney J. Neal Rodgers, who represented two of Jackson’s victims, Esmeyda Chavez and Jorge Ouiroz, who sued the city for $225,000, told WBTV the department was negligent in it’s hiring and retention of Jackson and therefore liable for the suffering his clients endured at the troubled officers hands.
"He had some issues in his life that probably should've have precluded him from becoming an officer," said Rodgers.
CMPD officials have acknowledged that recruiters “missed important information” within Jackson's background, such as the domestic violence restraining order, which should have raised serious questions about Jackson's character.
Since Jackson's arrest, the department has adopted a more stringent background check and screening process of it's applicants, which will include checking applicants' social networking site pages such as Facebook to look for potential red flags. CMPD is also considering adding civil request checks to the background process since domestic restraining orders are filed in civil court.
The Black Urban Times learned that Jackson remains incarcerated at the Mecklenburg County Jail as of Thursday night, where he has been in custody since his arrest earlier this year.
Several of Jackson's victims were present during the disgraced officer’s plea Thursday. A stoic Jackson, clad in an orange jail suit and shackles, sat silently at a table throughout the 30-minute proceeding. After Superior Court Judge Yvonne Mims Evans pronounced sentencing upon him, she asked if he wanted to address the court, Jackson declined. Had Jackson gone to trial, he would have faced almost 29 years in prison if found guilty of all charges.
Nov. 29, 2009: A woman alleges that while Jackson responded to a domestic violence call, he abused his authority as a police officer to "unlawfully fondle" the woman.
Dec. 18, 2009: Jackson stops a 17-year-old female while in uniform and driving his police cruiser. The victim later told officials that Jackson forced her into his car, and drove to another location where he sexually assaulted her.
Dec. 28, 2009: Two women tell police they were stopped for speeding by Jackson around 11 p.m. He orders the women to dismount the vehicle and begins "searching" them. A 21-year-old woman stopped by Jackson the same night tells police he stopped her and ordered her to "go to another location" where he sexually assaulted her.
Dec. 29, 2009: The woman involved in the Nov. 2 incident says she was stopped by Jackson a second time and fondled once again. She told police that during that incident, she was with a male companion when the attack occurred and when the male attempted to stop the officer's assault and telephone 911, Jackson arrested him.
Dec. 30, 2009: Police Chief Rodney Monroe holds a press conference releasing the first details of Jackson's arrest. Monroe adds that Jackson has been fired and lodged in the Mecklenburg County jail on a variety of charges. At that time officials only knew of two of Jackson's victims.
Jan. 8, 2010: Chief Monroe holds a press conference and announcing details of another assault by Jackson involving the two women in one car and say they have suggested the District Attorney's office file sexual battery charges against him. On this same day, a sixth victim comes forward alleging she was also assaulted by officer Jackson on Nov. 29.
Jan. 11, 2010: Jackson makes his first appearance in court by video and requests that Mecklenburg District Judge Tom Moore reduce his $423,000 bond. The request is denied and he remains in jail.
Jan. 19, 2010: Jackson is indicted by a Grand Jury on an array of sexual battery charges including felonious kidnapping, extortion and interfering with a 911 call.

Three Black Men File Discrimination Suit Against Manhattan McDonald's Restaurant

The Black Urban Times
Three African American men slapped a Manhattan McDonald's with a lawsuit claiming the Kip's Bay fast food chain restaurant decides which customers can use their bathroom, free, based upon the color of their skin.
Papers filed in Manhattan Supreme Court on October 8, 2010, allege that on October 11, 2009 plaintiffs Christopher White and Abdul Rasuul, entered the McDonald's restaurant with the intent to buy food.
Prior to ordering, White attempted to use the bathroom and found it locked. A Hispanic or Latino employee told White that the only way to use the restroom was to buy food.
Plaintiff Rasuul ordered food and the employee then allowed White to use the men’s room. Sometime thereafter, plaintiff Leroy Johnson entered the restaurant intending to buy food, but needed to use the restroom first. The employee also told him that he could not use the bathroom unless he ordered food.
Immediately thereafter, a Caucasian woman entered the restaurant asking to use the bathroom and the employee allowed her to do so without first ordering food. The court document says the entire incident was video tapped by the fast food chain’s surveillance system.
New York Attorney Ted Kessler is representing the plaintiff’s, whose addresses are listed as 120 East 32nd Street, which is a drop-in center for homeless adults. The court documents further allege that the defendants, "jointly and severally, caused the plaintiffs to suffer shock, pain, emotional, psychiatric, psychological and mental injuries, fear, annoyance and alarm."
Kessler told The Black Urban Times Wednesday that his client's are seeking a "nominal amount" from McDonald’s in order to pay for their therapy bills, but more importantly, they want an apology and to make sure "this doesn't happen again."
"People deserve to be treated fairly," said Kessler. "It is not fair for one minority group to discriminate against another. No one should be discriminated against for any reason."
Kessler was not sure of the national origin of the Hispanic/Latino employee who discriminated against his clients, but said that the employee was a “Spanish speaking person.”
The McDonald's Corporation has not responded to the lawsuit at this time.
Mcnewyork.com lists the manager of the 33rd and 3rd Avenue restaurant as Diana Rosario. The Black Urban Times spoke with Rosario on Wednesday seeking comment on the lawsuit and were referred to McDonald's home office in Long Island.

El Boricua Spotlight on ANTHONY RAMOS
Editor Anthony Ramos
Published Author and columnist
Check out his "IN MY OPINION" column at ElBoricua.com
Antonio Ramos (“Tony”) was born in Wilmington, Delaware, grew up in Brooklyn, New York and now splits his time between New York City and Florida. Tony began writing at the age of eleven, composing songs, poems and short stories. Throughout the years he joined workshops and writing organizations in order to strengthen his writing skills. Tony spent many years writing, often writing at night after work, on weekends and on the commuter trains or buses. During this period of learning, discovery and experimenting, he wrote many short stories until the small piles of unpublished manuscripts became large piles.
Tony had never contemplated the idea of writing a full-length novel, and, in fact, was quite terrified of such a monumental task. But then such a task, though daunting and seemingly impossible, turned out to become a true labor of love for Tony. Tony Ramos’ deep love for history and for his Hispanic heritage caused him to spend hours upon hours researching these two topics. These forces propelled him into researching Spanish history. He delved into Spain’s long forgotten past and found a plethora of historical information and based upon his research, published his first book, Profound Crossroads.

Tony Ramos believes that Puerto Ricans, in fact, all Hispanics share a common thread that goes back to the mother land. There is so much about their heritage that Hispanics do not know and this, at least to his way of thinking, is a tragedy. Tony Ramos believes in the notion that Hispanics must not only embrace their Indian heritage but must also embrace their Spanish heritage. Tony also believes that the Spanish language is beautiful and nothing sounds better to his ears when he hears ancient surnames majestically rolling out of peoples’ tongues. He is.....More of Anthony's biography

Famed Journalist, Geraldo Rivera, Celebrates 40 Years in News

Rivera is of Puerto Rican and Russian descent. His father was Puerto Rican and his mother is Ashkenazi Russian Jewish. Rivera, who grew up in Manhattan and West Babylon, New York, was raised "mostly Jewish and had a Bar Mitzvah.
The defense attorney, former talk show host, writer, reporter and journalist played varsity lacrosse as goalie while attending the University of Arizona. He attended the State University of New York Maritime College from September 1961 through May 1963 where he was a member of the rowing team.

The 67-year-old father of five earned his Juris Doctorate from the Brooklyn Law School in 1969, undertaking postgraduate work at the University of Pennsylavannia that same year before briefly attending Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in 1970.
Rivera, who has been married five times, was a member of New York City's finest (NYPD) for a brief period of time after college where he worked as an investigator. He returned to law representing a New York based Puerto Rican activist group and the Young Lords.
The Tau Delta Phi fraternity member got his first break in the journalism industry from news producer Al Primo who offered Rivera a job as a reporter but didn't care for his name, "Gerald" (he wanted something more Latin) so the two men agreed to go with the pronunciation used by the Puerto Rican side of Rivera's family: Geraldo, and so a legendary, controversial journalist with an affinity for melodramatic, high-profile stories was born.
In 1972, his coverage of the abuse and neglect of mentally retarded patients at Staten Island's Willowbrook State School garnered national attention and earned the young reporter a Peabody Award. From there he went on to appear in programs such as 20/20 and Nightline. It was the beginning of a blossoming career in journalism for the Russian Boricua.

From Rivera's Wiki Page:
Around this time, Rivera also began hosting ABC's Good Night America. The show featured the famous refrain from Arlo Guthrie's hit "City Of New Orleans" (written by Steve Goodman) as the theme. An episode of the program aired in 1975 showed the first national telecast of the historic Zapruder Film.
After Elvis Presley died in 1977, various media mistakenly reported that he had died from a heart attack. Rivera then investigated Presley's prescription drug records and concluded that he had died from multiple drug intake. His conclusion caused Tennessee medical authorities to later revoke the medical license of Dr. George C. Nichopoulos, for over prescribing.

In October 1985, ABC's Roone Arledge refused to air a report done by Sylvia Chase, for 20/20 on the relationship between Marilyn Monroe and John and Robert Kennedy. Rivera publicly criticized Arledge's journalistic integrity, claiming that Arledge's friendship with the Kennedy family (for example, Pierre Salinger, a former Kennedy aide, worked for ABC News at the time) had caused him to spike the story; as a result, Rivera was fired. Sylvia Chase quit 20/20, although she returned to ABC....MORE

The man who turned reporting into an extreme sport, Geraldo Rivera is celebrating 40 years on the beat and in the studio this weekend, The Star-Ledger reported.
The lawyer-turned-journalist is a divisive figure, all bluster and drama. A symbol of his machismo is his moustache, which has remained a constant through four decades of fashion trends.
A retrospective show will air tonight and tomorrow at 10 on the Fox News Channel, where he hosts a weekly diary of world events. “Geraldo at Large” will trace his career back to Labor Day weekend 1970, when he went into the field for the first time as an “Eyewitness News” contributor. It wasn’t any kind of bombshell, just an interview with the losing candidate for New York’s state attorney general office.
The Monmouth resident’s tabloid misadventures have set ratings records and spawned thousands of punch lines. When he plied open Al Capone’s vault on a syndicated 1986 special, he didn’t find gangster relics, just dust and concrete.

Still, the program drew an estimated 28 million viewers. Another notorious moment was an incident involving a flying chair and scuffling skinheads on Rivera’s talk show in 1988.
Although those are defining pop culture moments, the New York native has also earned a clutch of Emmy and Peabody prizes for his reporting. In 1972, he uncovered abuse at a Staten Island school for youngsters with learning disabilities. He broke the news that Elvis Presley’s death in....MORE

New Video: Lloyd Banks ft. Lloyd - Any Girl
Lloyd Banks is back with another official video called "Any Girl" featuring Lloyd. Two Lloyd's together make for a hit! I love the song and actually have to admit that this is the first song in my ipod to start my workout. I put in a good workout yesterday to this joint. While I was working out, my youngest daughters walked into my bedroom, heard the music and decided to join their Mommy in some excercise!! LOL! Gotta love the kids.
Anywho, while watching the video a thought crossed my mind. What's up with all the white girls? Not sure how I'm feeling about that. I did see a few Boricua's and a few beautiful sisters but none were the leads. There were also guest appearances by 50 Cent (showing off his dance moves) and Tony Yayo. Check out what I'm talking about below:
Feel free to post your thoughts!

Federal Judge Nixes Part of Arizona Immigration Bill
Just hours before the new immigration bill in Arizona was set to go into effect, a federal judge blocked a portion of the measure, which has had much of the Latino community up in arms. Unfortunately, this isn't the end.

It sets up a lengthy legal battle that could end up before the Supreme Court — ensuring that a law that reignited the immigration debate, inspired similar measures nationwide, created fodder for political campaigns and raised tensions with Mexico will stay in the spotlight.
Protesters who gathered at the state Capitol and outside the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City cheered when they heard the news. The governor, the law's authors and anti-illegal immigration groups vowed to fight on.
