New Political Editor- Valerie Coverdale joins The Black Urban Times

Hello Black Urban Times readers. I am Valerie Lin Coverdale and I have been invited to write on this site my views on the politics of race and gender. I have been passionate about these matters for much of my life. My Parents parents were politically involved and since I was a child of theirs, my involvement in such matters were of consequence.

My grandfather was a dynamic man, serving in the Democratic Convention in the late 60's, he participated also in the desegregation of the Army Grandpa Gibson was involved in the Geneva conferences, too My parents were involved in Operation Push with Jackson. My family and I moved to Berkeley, California mid-seventies and was exposed to radical politics. I was influenced to protest by both parents. Political and intellectual pursuits were a must on my household.

I was exposed to much "outside the box" thinking. Some of my writing may infuriate people. This is not the purpose. It is meant to get people to think outside mental boxes. And hopefully, your responses to my writing will do the same for me.

Current on my mind are books written by men that express how women should behave. I will write extensively on this. Some of my writing will be on politics 101. I am committed to the Constitution now. Much talk in politics is over what is constitutional and what is not. And small bits and pieces about how political structure is set up. Other random topics are certain to pop up, too.

I question how we "black" people view these matters. To be Black encompasses much. Jewish people may be of many races but  Jewish in culture if not religion.  Black people, on the other hand, are of similar diaspora but not religion or values. We have much variety and thought within our group, including Jewish people.

So, here I am, Valerie Lin Coverdale, writing in an attempt to engage you in your own cognitive process. I invite replies as tempered as you like. For in real discourse comes forth growth. Let's get ready to step out of our comfort zones and cardboard box thinking.

Hello again and thank you Black Urban Times for allowing me to contribute my writing to your wonderful on-line publication.

2011.. Romney: " I WOULD CUT FEMA"

President Obama makes a choice...the lives of Americans mean more than the campaigning in a swing state

by GeekSwagg

President Obama could have went to Ohio..but he didn't. Being that we are NJ based we have a deeper appreciation for our commander-in-chief. His call is that the citizens of the United States mean more to him than campaigning. That's a President.

Today for alot of States it is the deadline to register to vote. Voting is so much more deeper then just getting who you want to be in office. Yes that is important but there is a history behind it that should be respected.

The time to end out of school suspensions is now

The recent report from the Schott Foundation, shows that only 52 percent of black males graduate high school and 58 percent of latino males.

A stark contrast when you look at white males with a rate of 78 percent. Let's stop out of school suspensions now and let's work as a community to bring african-american and latino males to a higher standard in education.
The full press release from the schott foundation is below.

SBA News Digest

Helping contractors and construction companies get capital faster:
The health and success of the construction industry is critical to our nation’s economy. SBA knows that we must do all we can to make sure this sector grows, and can compete for contracting opportunities and create jobs. That is why SBA is proud to announce our new “Quick App” for surety bonds.  This new application process combines two applications into one to make it easier and faster for small businesses and general contractors to compete for contracts. White Supremacist With Ties To Neo-Nazi Groups Elected To Pennsylvania County GOP Committee

steve smith/white supremacist/GOP  PA. Committee member

This is the new reality. The issue is that the Neo-Nazis have invaded certain factions of the GOP. This is the new Republican party. An elephant wearing a white hood. Its no mistake that several members of the Tea Party and the GOP have used racists sub-texts against President Obama. Make no mistake..the SIKH massacre is a step in the direction that the hate fueled Tea Pary rhetoric has caused. It has to stop..let's hope sooner than later.
