SBA News Digest

Helping contractors and construction companies get capital faster:
The health and success of the construction industry is critical to our nation’s economy. SBA knows that we must do all we can to make sure this sector grows, and can compete for contracting opportunities and create jobs. That is why SBA is proud to announce our new “Quick App” for surety bonds.  This new application process combines two applications into one to make it easier and faster for small businesses and general contractors to compete for contracts. The Lady Geek's Topic of the Day: CISPA Defeated

Tales of the Lady Geek

The Lady Geek's Topic of the Day: CISPA Defeated

Greetings dear readers, the Lady Geek here with your news of the technological world.  As I write this, I have just spent an entire day educating a group of teen geeks in internet safety and security.  Education is a rewarding experience that I enjoy immensely, not because of the money (I volunteer) but because one of my core goals as an IT professional from the community has always been to level the playing field for the non technically minded. I do this in the hopes that no one from the community be taken advantage of or 'sold' some unnecessary service again. From Basic Maintenance and repair to Parental controls and false ideas about the 'anonymity' of the internet, I feel it's part of my responsibility to inform and educate the masses about the simplicity of the technological world.

This brings me to today's topic, CISPA and it's defeat in the Senate.

Lady Geek's Topic of the Day: Cloud Storage

Tales of the Lady Geek

Hello, Lady Geek here with today’s installment of the tales of my technological life. I must admit, it feels good to be back, and I hope you missed me as much as I’ve missed you.  As of this writing, I am enjoying a purely non technical moment in time, relaxing in the “Mom Cave” that my children and husband gifted me with last month in celebration of yet another Geeklet to be. It’s so lovely and bright, freshly painted in different hues of greens and blues with my favorite chair positioned ‘just so’ right next to the shelves full of books, ready for story time or relaxation into another world.

At the well loved desk is my new computer chair, thoughtfully provided by my best friend and on the desk are my precious electronics, ready for my return to the fast paced world of computer repair and support at any given time.  During my hiatus, a truly remarkable thing occurred in the technological world. Google has finally released the long-awaited entry into the cloud storage scene, Google Drive. Add that with Microsoft’s revamped SkyDrive and what we have before us is true competition to my favorite cloud storage program, Dropbox.

This Lady Geek is nothing if not thorough in her investigation, so without further adieu, my topic of the day.

The Lady Geek's Topic of the Day: PC Repair and You

Tales of the Lady Geek:

Hello, your friendly neighborhood Lady Geek here happily bringing you yet another journey from my technological life. I come from a time where computers were actually designed for geniuses and engineers, the systems came with huge repair and maintenance manuals that would make the telephone book look at them in fear. I went to college during an era when computers were just really expensive word processors and awesome game machines.

Tech: Will.I.Am talks education, science and technology

Close your eyes and think about today. Think about the United States of America. Think about the state of education. Think about the state of job creation. Think about the state of mind we are in. Think about what our country might look like in 20 years. Now think about and wonder why and who and when and what it's going to take for Detroit not to turn into a slum. What is it going to take for my niece and her friends to have the best education? And your nephew to graduate and not just get a job, but have a career?
I'm writing this on my laptop and you're probably reading it on your phone or tablet, and none of the stuff we are actually buying "regardless" of a recession is made in America. Technology is recession proof and most kids are not dreaming of being programmers, scientists or engineers. The ones that are, do not get the spotlight or attention. Instead, they are looked at as geeks or uncool, when in actuality technology is the only thing that is cool today. iPhones, Android devices, Facebook, Twitter (all tech), all exciting. This is why I put my own money, passion and time to take Dean Kamen's FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and turn it into a back-to-school TV special.

5 reasons NewMe Accelerator is #winning

Staff
The Black Urban Times
1. The program is run by real tech gurus, found in Wayne Sutton and Angela Benton. Both are active in social media and very influential in the tech world.

2. The program is getting worldwide attention that will make more African-americans look a little at getting a career in tech.

3. They are making history. This program will open the door for more African-american tech developers' chances for venture capital from the mainstream. With sponsors like Google on their side..the program could reach new heights.

4. Tech is a hot field and the developers in the New Me program, all have great applications of software. One of them called, Playd, was made by a young brother from Newark(Brickcity), NJ. That just shows you how they're making waves.

5. They know they're pioneers. Whenever you're making history, you have that feeling inside. That desire to make it work. That's what I see when I read about NewME. They will be in the history books for paving the way for the new generation of minority tech entrepreneurs.

NYT: Using a Little Body English to Give Electronic Commands -Microsoft Natal aka The Wii Killer

LAS VEGAS — The technology industry is going retro — moving away from remote controls, mice and joysticks to something that arrives without batteries, wires or a user manual.
It’s called a hand.
In the coming months, the likes of Microsoft, Hitachi and major PC makers will begin selling devices that will allow people to flip channels on the TV or move documents on a computer monitor with simple hand gestures. The technology, one of the most significant changes to human-device interfaces since the mouse appeared next to computers in the early 1980s, was being shown in private sessions during the immense Consumer Electronics Show here last week. Past attempts at similar technology have proved clunky and disappointing. In contrast, the latest crop of gesture-powered devices arrives with a refreshing surprise: they actually work.
“Everything is finally moving in the right direction,” said Vincent John Vincent, the co-founder of GestureTek, a company that makes software for gesture devices.
Manipulating the screen with the flick of the wrist will remind many people of the 2002 film “Minority Report” in which Tom Cruise moves images and documents around on futuristic computer screens with a few sweeping gestures. The real-life technology will call for similar flair and some subtlety. Stand in front of a TV armed with a gesture technology camera, and you can turn on the set with a soft punch into the air. Flipping through channels requires a twist of the hand, and raising the volume occurs with an upward pat. If there is a photo on the screen, you can enlarge it by holding your hands in the air and spreading them apart and shrink it by bringing your hands back together as you would do with your fingers on a cellphone touch screen.

Guys..before you text your side-chick read this!! Nytimes: Text Messages: Digital Lipstick on the Collar

There is a question that has crossed the mind recently of anyone who has sent a cellphone text message while cheating on a spouse: What was I thinking? Text messages are the new lipstick on the collar, the mislaid credit card bill. Instantaneous and seemingly casual, they can be confirmation of a clandestine affair, a record of the not-so-discreet who sometimes forget that everything digital leaves a footprint. read more

Techcrunch: Mc Hammer's DanceJam website finds a buyer..Hammer is still making money!!

DanceJam, a dance video startup founded by MC Hammer, Geoffrey Arone and Anthony Young in April 2007, will soon be acquired by Purevideo Networks, we’ve heard from multiple sources. Note: I am a small stockholder in DanceJam, although the company won’t comment to me about this at all.

We don’t know the purchase price or other terms of the deal. Both companies are privately funded.

Earlier this year Purevideo Networks also acquired Sportnet, a site that controls a number of popular topical video sites.
