A few seconds of exuberant finger-flipping cost Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams a quarter of a million dollars Monday.
The National Football League fined Adams $250,000 for "conduct detrimental to the league" after he was photographed waving his middle fingers at the Buffalo Bills and their fans near the end of Sunday's 41-17 win by the Titans.
Adams, 86, could be seen making the gesture from his owner's box at LP Field in Nashville, Tennessee, on Sunday -- first with alternating hands, then both.
"I got caught up in the excitement of a great day, but I do realize that those types of things shouldn't happen," Adams said in a statement issued Monday.
The Bills and Titans, formerly the Houston Oilers, have a rivalry that dates back to the 1960s-era American Football League. Adams and Bills owner Ralph Wilson were among the AFL's founders.
"I need to specifically apologize to the Bills, their fans, our fans and the NFL," Adams said. "I obviously have a great deal of respect for Ralph Wilson and the history we have shared."
In his statement, Adams said he would accept any sanctions the league handed down.
