At approximately 1:30 p.m., today gunfire rang out at the Soldier Readiness Center, aboard the U.S. Army base in Fort Hood, Texas.
The casualties appear to be soldiers who are about to be deployed or who are returning from the war zone and at the center to undergo medical screenings.

Officials state that the gunman, Major Malik Nadal Hasan, a soldier, was killed by law enforcement personnel and they apprehended two other soldiers suspected of taking part in the attack.

The soldier's shooting spree has left 12 people dead and 31 injured.

A graduation ceremony for soldiers who finished college courses while deployed was going on in an auditorium at the Readiness Center at the time of the shooting, said Sgt. Rebekah Lampam, a Fort Hood spokeswoman.

The post has been placed on locked down since the shootings. The wounded have been sent to local hospitals in central Texas and their conditions were not known at theblackurbantimes.com press time.

In a brief appearance President Barack Obama called the shooting "a horrific outburst of violence." He said it's a tragedy to lose a soldier overseas and even more horrifying when they come under fire at an Army base on American soil. He sent condolences to the wounded, their families and the families of the shooter.

"We will make sure that we get answers to every single question about this horrible incident," the President said. "We are going to stay on this."

Fort Hood, which officially opened in 1942, and was named in honor of Gen. John Bell Hood, is the largest active duty armored post in the United States. It's land covers approximately 339 square miles and is home to about 52,000 Army troops. The Army post is located halfway between Austin and Waco, Texas.
