NJ Transit train collides with vehicle, kills driver

CLIFTON, N.J. — An empty New Jersey Transit train on its way to New York struck a vehicle that somehow got stuck on the tracks early Sunday, killing the man inside.

The Jeep was not at a designated railroad crossing when the crash occurred around 5:20 a.m. in Clifton, said NJ Transit spokesman Dan Stessel. The engineer activated the train’s brakes but could not stop in time, he said.

It appears that the vehicle left the road shortly before the crash and went through some trees before landing on the tracks, but an investigation is continuing.

Stessel said authorities were still working to identify the Jeep driver.

The train was traveling toward Suffern, N.Y., where it was to begin its route on the Main Line. The accident caused minimal service delays.

City fumes as clubs smoke on By REUVEN BLAU

The city is failing to snuff out smoking speakeasies.

No trendy club or neighborhood pub has ever been shuttered for repeat smoking violations, despite the city having the authority to yank their licenses after three tickets in one year.

There were 66 recalcitrant recidivists this year, and 87 in 2008.

Offenders include Chelsea's Bungalow 8, which has been slapped with multiple violations three years in a row, and Buddha Bar, a favorite of Eva Mendes and Lindsay Lohan.

About 1.7 percent of city-inspected locales were hit with smoking scofflaw fines this year, a drop from 6.4 percent in fiscal year 2008.

The Health Department collected $145,000 in smoking fines this year, down from $174,675 in 2008.

Couple keep Xmas spirit, return wallet with $5k cash

It was a case of wallet lost, wallet found — in 15 minutes, with $5,000 cash in the billfold left untouched.

Robert Slatkin left the wallet sitting on a Bloomingdale’s display while Christmas shopping on Wednesday.

He retraced his steps in the store and raced to the lost-and-found department, but nothing turned up.

Outside on Lexington Avenue, Slatkin suddenly got a call from American Express — with good news. A couple found his wallet on a scarf display. They asked a store manager to put it in a safe and called American Express, which contacted the owner.

Back at Bloomingdale’s, the couple handed Slatkin his wallet, and he insisted on giving them a $300 reward. He also invited them to use the indoor pool of his Upper East Side apartment building.
