Paterson called his son's run-in with cops "just one of those things."

It wasn't gambling. Only child's play.

Gov. Paterson defended his son Wednesday as cop sources said the boy, who they arrested playing dice and holding a missing ATM card, likely won't be charged.

"The principal said that the kids play this game all the time," he said. "No money was involved, it wasn't gambling and it was just one of those situations."

The debit card found on Alex Paterson, 15, was reported missing a month ago by a woman who lost it at a Long Island Rail Road Station, which is where Alex said he found it, police sources told the Daily News.

It was unclear why the boy never turned the card over - but police say that it wasn't used after its owner lost it.

Alex and four pals were taken into custody as they played the dice game Cee-Lo outside Beacon High School, which the young Paterson attends.

The governor said the whole event was "just one of those things."

But one of Alex's friends said the teen is angry at both cops and the media for making "such a big deal out of a dice game."

"He feels he was in the wrong place at the wrong time," said the pal, who gave his name as Daniel and said he was with Alex when he found the card.

"He's a really good kid who would never be in trouble."

Cops were searching for Alex's identification when they found the card in his wallet. He was taken to the 20th Precinct station house where he was issued a juvenile report for "loitering for the purposes of gambling," police said.

Alex showed no signs of that anger as he left for school yesterday.

"Good morning," he beamed before climbing into an SUV outside the governor's Harlem home.

"I'm all right," he shrugged when asked how he was doing.
