Newark Toddler Dies After TV, Dresser Fall on Him

NEWARK
- Police say a 2-year-old boy was killed Monday night after he pulled a television set off a dresser and it fell down on top of him.

According to officials, the toddler was at his home on Montgomery Street in Newark when the television and dresser came down on his head. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead around 8:30 p.m.

Newark police say no criminal charges have been filed as it appears to be an accident, but they are waiting for autopsy results before making a final determination.

WOMAN KILLED, FIREFIGHTER INJURED IN FIRE

RANDOLPH - One woman was killed and a firefighter was injured during a morning blaze in Randolph Wednesday.

Firefighters spent hours trying to put out the fire at a home located at the intersection of Carrel Road and Center Grove Road. Officials say at least two residents made it out of the home safely, but one woman was found dead on the second floor.

A firefighter was also injured after he went out a second-story window while searching for the woman. No names have been released and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

NEWARK COLLEGE STUDENTS DEATH TRIAL TO BEGIN IN APRIL

NEWARK - The first trial in connection with the 2007 schoolyard killings of three college students in Newark has been scheduled for April.

Prosecutors say the trial of 26-year-old Rodolfo Godinez could take up to two months. Jury selection is expected to begin April 5.

Godinez and five other defendants pleaded not guilty to the execution-style slayings. They will be tried separately.

Prosecutors say on August 4, 2007, the three victims were forced to kneel in front of a wall behind Mount Vernon Elementary School and were fatally shot in the back of their heads. A fourth person who was shot survived.
