Rapper Lil Wayne Headed to Prison for a Year

After having his sentencing cancelled three previous times for dental surgery and other reasons, rapper Lil Wayne nee Dwayne Michael Carter was finally sentenced for his gun charge conviction stemming from July 2007.

Carter aka Weezy is headed to the big house for one year after Judge Charles Solomon handed down his sentence in Manhattan Supreme Court Monday afternoon.

The hip hop star will likely serve his time, which may end up being eight months with time for good behavior, in the protective custody unit at Rikers Island for the handgun police found on his tour bus two years ago after a concert at the Beacon Theatre.

Police reported a cloud of Marijuana smoke rolling from the eight-time Grammy nominees tour bus which raised their suspicion. When they went to search the bus, they found the weapon.

Carter's attorney, Stacey Richman, argued that the weapon, a 40-caliber Springfield semi-automatic, belonged to a member of Carter's entourage, but prosecutors weren't buying it. Police testified that as they boarded the bus, they observed the rapper tossing the weapon into a Louis Vuitton knapsack which contained a prescription bottle with the name Dwayne Carter on the label.

Prosecutors argued that "possession," in it's legal definition, means having control or "dominion" over an item which means the defendant in a case does not have to own the item he is accused of illegally possessing.

Fans in the courtroom during Carter's sentencing shouted words of support and love from the galley as bailiff's escorted the 27-year-old Grammy-award winning rapper off to jail.

"Weezy! We love you!" shouted one fan.

"Yo, keep your head up, Weezy!" another fan shouted.

Carter, a New Orleans native, is CEO of Cash Money Records and the first hip-hop artist to ever perform at the Country Music Awards in 2008. He was later named the first Man of the Year for MTV.
