The largest earthquake to hit California in more than 18 years rocked Southern California Sunday registering a 7.2 on the Richter scale.
The quake struck south of Mexicali, Mexico, at 3:40 p.m. Easter Sunday rattling windows, rupturing gas pipes and damaging water systems. The 7.2 was felt as far as Tijuana, Nevada and Arizona. Cities as far as Santa Barbara, California felt the quake.
Early reports indicated minor structural damage, but more than 5,000 Southern California Edison electric customers were affected with either 30 seconds of flickering lights or lengthy outages.
Three strong aftershocks were reported within an hour of the first earthquake, including a 5.1 magnitude in the Imperial County area followed by a Magnitude-4.5 and magnitude-4.3.
In Yuma, Arizona, 3,369 customers experienced short periods without electric service. A small number of customers were without power in rural areas for extended periods of time.
The quake sparked momentary fears of a Tsunami in Tijuana, but the beach quickly filled up with beach goers after the fear passed.
