The engine of a Jet Blue aircraft fell from a plane during takeoff from Newark Liberty International Airport Monday morning.

Airport officials say flight 507, carrying 134 passengers, was headed for Fort Lauderdale, Florida when it took off from Newark airport at 6:15 a.m.

Shortly into the flight, the metal casing cover of the engine compartment dislodged from the aircraft causing the engine to separate from the plane and fall off.

Airport traffic was diverted after airport officials were forced to close the runway where the cover landed and clean up debris. The plane landed safely at Newark airport and no passenger injuries were reported.
