Authorities have charged 26 tax preparers in Manhattan and the Bronx with submitting thousands of fraudulent tax returns, some who, according to prosecutors, made "millions of dollars" as a result of their tax cheating.

"Operation Brass Tax" had Internal Revenue Service agents pose as customers to aid law enforcement in their crackdown on tax cheats.

U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara told the New York Post that the tax preparers cost the government tens of millions of dollars in tax revenue and the sting operation added punch to his message for people to pay their taxes.

In all, the government says the suspects allegedly submitted 35,000 tax returns with more than $95 million in deductions.

The tax filing deadline is next Thursday, April 15.
