A former U.S. amateur heavyweight boxing champion is in critical condition today after he was shot in the chest after an argument with another man in the parking lot of the Miracle Plaza Shopping Center in North Bellport.
Suffolk County police say Adam Willett, a 2006 U.S. amateur boxing champion, went to the aid of two teens he knew from a nearby school where Willett worked as a security guard. The teens were being harassed by an unidentified man and, recognizing Willett from their school, called on him for help.
Witnesses say Willett and the man argued before the man got in his car and peeled away. They say the man returned just as Willett was getting into his own car. When Willett, 28, stepped out of his vehicle and the man shot him. Police say the gunmen went through Willett's pockets before he shot him.
Mike Murphy of the Veteran's Memorial Boxing Club was Willett's trainer at one time. He said the young boxer worked as a security guard at a local high school and described Willett as a "good guy" who would help anyone who needed it.
Murphy told Newsday that Wilett began boxing at his gym in 2001 and was almost an immediate success. He became the U.S. amateur champion in 2006 and later, an alternate on the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team in Beijing after losing in the trials.
"He's a tough kid. He knows how to fight his way out of tragedy," said Murphy.
Willett is listed in critical condition at Stony Brook University Medical Center. Suffolk County police say they are searching for the suspect.
