Shirley Shortway-English, former Hawthorne councilwoman, has been sentenced to one year of probation for fraudulently obtaining more than $17,000 in Social Security disability benefits.

Shortway-English, 57, pleaded guilty in January to theft of government funds after she feigned being unable to work for two years. Prosecutors say during the time the former councilwoman claimed she was disabled, Shortway-English was working at a Hawthorne restaurant owned by her family

During sentencing Monday in Newark, U.S. District Judge William H. Walls also ordered Shortway-English to make full restitution to the Social Security Administration.
