Media Banned from Rowan Towers Resident, Managment Meeting

The media was barred from attending a meeting between tenants and representatives of Interstate Realty, the property managers of the Rowan Towers Wednesday afternoon.

Interstate Realty manages the apartment building for Affordable Housing Equity Partners, LLC, which owns apartment complexes in Jersey City, Atlantic City, Camden as well as Illinois, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Missouri, Delaware and as far away as the Virgin Islands.

According to AHEPs web site, their Rowan Towers property has 195 units of which they have reportedly invested $1,950,000 into. The company's Executive Vice President is Joseph Purcell, a licensed CPA. The company's web site states their goal is to provide "equity to build or rehabilitate only the best quality affordable housing in the country and to provide a safe and decent home for it's occupants."

Long suffering tenants at the apartment complex say security has been inadequate for more than a decade, but property managers have vowed to improve security at the complex since the gang rape of a seven-year-old child and her 15-year-old step sister 11 days ago.

Neighbors say police presence is "constant and ineffective," which explains why many residents fear retaliation from marauding gang members if they speak out against the criminal element within the building.

Tammy Blake, lives in apartment 13-F, right down the hall from the apartment where the rapes occurred told the Associated Press that she didn't hear anything, but loud music and raucous behavior are the standard, not the exception, in the building.

"You get so used to the way things are here," said Blake. "We all care because this is where we live, but fear keeps people quiet."

"People absolutely know who these men are," Mayor Doug Palmer told The Associated Press Wednesday. "If you were there and didn't participate, you really need to come forward. If you don't come forward, then you are going to be charged like you participated."

Attempts by the NewJerseyNewsroom.com to reach Affordable Housing Equity Partners, LLC were unsuccessful.
