Rahway police responding to a 911 call at the King inn Motel on Route 1 of a man with a gun were forced to shoot the suspect after he brandished a knife at responding officers who were in the midst of patting him down.
When police arrived at the scene, the suspect stood in the motel parking lot wielding what appeared to be a bayonet. The officer ordered the man to drop his weapon, but the suspect refused. Additional officers arrived on the scene attempting to get the man to surrender his weapon.
Once they did, the officers approached the man and instructed him to place his hands on the car. As the officers began patting the suspect down, he spun around brandishing another knife he had concealed under his coat.
The shooting, which was caught on video by one of the cameras from a responding officers patrol car, shows the man lunging towards officers with the knife as the officer turns away from the knife and shoots the man.
Although the suspect had been wounded, he kept lunging at the officer who shot him. The video shows the officers were attempting to back away from the knife wielding suspect before firing several more shots.
Rahway Police Chief John Rodger said he unidentified man was rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick where he underwent surgery. Details of his condition were not available at press time.
As with all police-involved shootings, the Union County Prosecutor's Office will investigate the incident.
