NewsChannel 3 has reported that Virginia officials have arrested a Newport News Sheriff's deputy they say engaged in sexual intercourse with a female inmate.
A warrant on file with General District Criminal Court details why Townes is sitting behind bars.
Investigators say the inmate was on her way home from a work release program when Deputy Townes picked her up in his car and drove her to his Riverlands Drive apartment where they had sex, all while the inmate was in the custody of Newport News.
Officials say Townes, 41, is suspected of aiding in the escape of an inmate and slipping contraband to the inmate at the jail. The Newport News Sheriff's Department says these charges are involving the same inmate.
Townes, who refused NewsChannel 3's request for an interview, was arrested Friday and remains behind bars in Virginia Beach without the benefit of bond and has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of his criminal case.
