President Obama Signs Daniel Pearl Freedom of Press Act

President Obama signed the Daniel Pearl Freedom of the Press Act into legislation on Monday with the intent to promote free press worldwide.

The bipartisan measure, inspired by the murder of Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter in Pakistan after the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center, requires the State Department to expand its scrutiny of media restrictions and intimidation as part of its annual review of human rights in each country. Among other things, the department will be required to determine whether foreign governments participate in or condone violations of press freedom.

After expressing gratitude to those who backed the bill, President Obama told the packed Oval Office, "This legislation, in a very modest way, I think puts us clearly on the side of journalistic freedom. I particularly want to thank the Pearl family, who have been so outspoken and so courageous in sending a clear message that, despite Daniel’s death, his vision of a well-informed citizenry that is able to make choices and hold governments accountable, that that legacy lives on."

Mr. Obama was joined in the Oval Office by Mr. Pearl’s widow, Mariane, parents Judea and Ruth, his sisters, Michelle and Tamara, and his son, Adam, who was born several months after his father’s murder and will turn eight later this month.....Full article here
