UPDATE
By 11:00 p.m. many Dominion Virginia Power customers had their power restored after a ban of thunderstorms swept through the area causing damage to a transmission line at a sub station in the Virginia Beach area.
Restoration crews will continue to make repairs to the damaged transmission line and try to confirm if, in fact, lightning caused the outage.
Chuck Penn, a Dominion Power spokesman said there was still work being done at the Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek.
9:53 p.m. WEDNESDAY
An outage at the Diamond Springs Power sub station left over 14,000 Dominion Virgina Power customers in the dark Wednesday beginning around 8:55 p.m.
Mrs. Everette, an employee at the Norfolk call center for Dominion Virginia Power said at least 14, 355 customers in the Virginia Beach area were without power as of 10:00 p.m. Everette added that at least 1,034 customers in the Norfolk area were also without power.
The cause of the outage is unknown, but the utility company says restoration crews are working diligently to restore customers power as soon as possible. in all, approximately 18,000 customers were left in the dark in the midst of a
a thunderstorm that swept through the region early Wednesday night.
Around 9 p.m. there were 12 lightning strikes that may have caused the outage at the sub station on Diamond Springs Road in Virginia Beach.
