A Brooklyn man and his accomplice set out to rob a Queens Bodega and instead ended up with one, Jose Cruz, begging for his life and the other running for the door.
Cruz, 24, and his unidentified accomplice initially entered the Lantigua Deli in Astoria a little after 7 a.m., pretending to be customers. They cased the bodega and left only to return though the back door where they found Maria Monta cooking in the back kitchen.
The second unidentified suspect forced her and a customer to lie down on the floor.
At that time, Cruz went behind the deli counter where he was face-to-face with Danny Caba, a store assistant, who grabbed at Cruz' gun hand.
"You decide because it's your life. If a guy comes with a gun to overpower you, you don't wait," Colon told WCBS. "You got to over(power him), or you wait for the guy to kill you."
Caba, store manager Luis Colon and a customer wound up pouncing on Cruz and gave the suspect a beat down that sent his partner scampering for the front door, where a third bandit waited in a getaway car.
The store owner told WCBS that when the two would-be robbers gave the store the once-over, they thought the man behind them, Colon, was a customer. The owner suspects that the robbers may have thought that his manager, Caba, was alone in the store.
"They figured it out, like, only one person was working. That's why they came back," the owner said.
After subduing the one robber, Cruz, Colon dialed 911. The police arrived within five minutes. Colon said that when they turned the tables on Cruz, he cried and said, "Please let me go, I have a family."
Their response to him, "You weren't thinking about ours when you came in with the gun."
