LSU's Chad Jones, who was drafted by the New York Giants, underwent surgery for a broken left leg and ankle Friday following an early morning car crash after his SUV smashed into a pole.
Jones, who was transported to the LSU Public Hospital in New Orleans where he was listed in guarded condition, was still in surgery this afternoon, His agent, Rocky Arceneaux, told The Associated Press.
It was not clear what caused the 21-year-old dual sports player to lose control of his vehicle during the 6 a.m. accident that occurred on a six-lane thoroughfare on the west side of the city.
Jones had to be extracted from the vehicle, but the two other men riding with him were unharmed, said police spokeswoman Shereese Harper, who added that it was too early in the investigation to know what caused the crash. Police say toxicology reports will determine whether alcohol contributed to Jones losing control of the SUV.
Jones, a safety, was drafted in the third round. He was part of the Tigers' 2007 national championship team and also was a left-handed relief pitcher for the 2009 LSU baseball team that won the 2009 College World Series. He was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers weeks after the Giants selected him in the NFL draft. He signed with the Giants last week.
