9-year-old Ronnell Gurley of the Breukelen Houses in Canarsie was shot last night as he tried to retrieve a relatives stolen bicycle from a teenager, police told the New York Post.
Police say Gurley was shot twice, once in the back and once in the arm, around 9 p.m. Thursday about an hour after his relatives bicycle went missing. Gurley and some friends went looking for it and spotted a teenager with the bike near the Breukelen Housing project and went to get it.
As they approached the teen, he pulled a gun and opened fire hitting the nine-year-old. Gurley was transported to Brookdale Hospital with a fractured arm and a gunshot wound to his back.
Ronnelle's grandmother, Edna Gurley told the Post, "When I was young, you would end it with fists and shake hands. A stray bullet doesn't know it's going to hit a 9-year-old."
Thursday night police had five youths, ranging in age from 12 to 16, in custody.
