The NYPD have released further details from the morning car crash in Harlem.

Two armed robbery suspects attempting to flee from undercover police in Harlem after the vehicle they were in was stopped near Lenox Avenue and 140th Street around 9:15 a.m. Tuesday.

When police initially stopped the Chevrolet Pacifica, the driver exited the vehicle and surrendered to police. At that time, his passenger moved into the driver's seat and sped off, said police sources.

With police in hot pursuit, the driver led officers on an 18-block chase before colliding with a Honda Odyssey van causing both vehicles to spin out of control, plowing into pedestrians walking along the Lenox Avenue and 122nd street.

"The Pacifica had to be going at least 60 mph," witness and barbershop owner Wayne Harris, 42, told the New York Daily News. Harris, who was sitting in his parked car and watched the collision, told the News, "It sounded like an explosion. They (the cars) started doing 360s."

Police say it was the Pacifica that struck two women (one a 70-year-old Nun that later died of her injuries at Harlem Hospital) and a deliveryman on a bike. In all six people were injured by the crash. A mother and her son riding in the minivan were also injured and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Witnesses say after the Pacifica came to rest, the driver and a passenger in the back of the vehicle kicked open the crumpled door and ran through the crowds along W. 122nd Street and remain at large.

A police spokesman told the New York Daily News that police were not chasing the Pacifica at the time of the crash but witnesses said they believed an unmarked police car was following the suspects vehicle.

Police officials say officers stopped the Pacific because it matched the description of a vehicle used during a pair of armed robberies Monday night. Investigators also suspected it was used as a getaway car in a robbery of a Columbia University student early Tuesday morning. The hunt for the two escaped suspects continues.
