A Harlem school's summer class trip ended in tragedy when a 12-year-old girl drowned at Nassau County's Long Beach. A group of children went for a swim in the ocean to beat the summer heat when someone noticed that the 12-year-old, of Long Island, was missing.

There were no lifeguards on duty when the drowning occurred, Charles Theofan, the city manager for Long Beach told the New York Daily News.

With the help of beach workers, teachers and students began frantically searching for the little girl, but it took 90 minutes to locate her body.

"By the time they found her, it was too late," said Theofan.

Lifeguards will not be on duty at the Nassau County beach until next week, and there were signs posted along the beach advising swimmers of the lack of lifeguards. This drowning was the second drowning this year in the Atlantic Ocean off Long Beach.

On May 25, Manuel Tiburcio, 19, of Brooklyn, was wading in waist-high water when a rip tide pulled him away from the shore causing him to drown.
