Ocean County fire marshals continue to investigate a fire that badly damaged the home of Island Heights Volunteer Fire Department Chief Andrew Parks Tuesday.
Dispatchers were first notified of the fire by Island Heights police officer Jillian Dworzanski who noticed smoke coming from Chief Parks' Summit Avenue home around 1:44 p.m. Dworzanski broke a window to the front door of the home to rescue Parks' Labrador retriever before fire crews began arriving.
Fire Captain K.C. Baney of the Island Heights Fire Company told the APP.com that the blaze was difficult for firefighters because it moved from space to space within the ranch style home.
"The fire was in the voids of the attic space," said Baney. "Our attack crews had a difficult time chasing this fire because it was moving from one void space to the next."
Firefighters, battling the raging heat in addition to the flames, eventually brought the blaze under control, but had to cut through the roof to search for hot spots. Most of the fire damage was at the center of the roof, which later collapsed into the top portion of the house.
"They pretty much lost everything," 2nd Lt. Tom Platt of the borough Volunteer Fire Company told the APP.com.
Chief Parks, his wife Courtney nor their children were injured during the swift moving fire that required six fire departments and took several hours to extinguish.
Tuesday night, via the Island Heights Volunteer Fire Company website, the Chief and his wife posted words of gratitude to those who responded to the fire at their home. In a show of brotherhood, fellow firefighters have banned together to collect donations for the Parks family.
"The Parks have two young children — a boy and a girl — so any donations of toys and household items, or monetary donation would be greatly appreciated," said Platt.
If you wish to drop-off a donation for the family, please e-mail the firehouse at webmaster@ihvfc.com for drop-off instructions. Monetary donations for the family may be sent to Island Heights Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 316, Island Heights, NJ 08732, Attn: Chief Parks Donation.
