The former fiancee of Los Angeles Lakers forward and current free agent Josh Powell, Emily Peniche, was arrested in Norfolk, Virginia after she and a companion were stopped and found to be in possession of a large amount of cocaine, the Virginia Pilot reported.
According to a criminal affidavit filed by U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement, police, acting on a tip that Peniche and Samuel Q. Moses would be driving to the Norfolk area with a large amount of cocaine later that day from New Jersey, stopped the two after they crossed the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel about 1:30 p.m. on July 5.
As police searched the vehicle, they uncovered a kilo of cocaine, or more than 2.2 pounds, wrapped in a girdle and stuffed inside a duffel bag and both were placed under arrest.
Peniche made her first appearance in U.S. District Court Wednesday where a magistrate judge ordered her jailed pending a bond hearing set for Monday.
Peniche and Powell, who met while Powell played for the Clippers, have been involved in a highly publicized custody dispute over their 3-year-old daughter, Patience. Peniche accused Powell of tricking her into not showing up for a court date so that he would be given full custody. She said she had not seen her baby in 15 months and accused Powell's new wife of going along with the shady plot to steal her daughter.
