Jazz Singer Al Jarreau was hospitalized Wednesday after falling ill and becoming "weak from the altitude" while in the French Alps, his publicist told CNN.com.

In a written statement, read by his publicist, Jarreau expressed regret for having to cancel several concerts and disappointing fans. The Grammy award winning singer was scheduled to perform in France, Germany, Barcelenette, Osnabruck, Braunschweig and Azerbaijan over the next week.

Jarreau was admitted to the intensive care unit of an unnamed hospital after he arrived in the resort town of Barcelonette in the southern French Alps. Doctors stabilized the 70-year-old, but advised Jarreau to take a few days off of his tour to recover. He is reportedly awake and able to speak.

"His first question was to enquire about his wife, Susan, and his second question was to ask about his tour dates," his publicist said. "He is always thinking about other people."

Jarreau could return to the concert stage next Thursday in Nuremberg, Germany, his publicist said.
