Teaneck has chosen the first Muslim mayor in Bergen County.
Mohammed Hameeduddin has become one of only a small number of Muslin mayors in New Jersey.
Hameeduddin, who won a council seat two years ago, received five out of seven votes at the annual reorganization of township government, defeating Councilwoman Lizette Parker, who had been deputy mayor since 2006 and would have become Teaneck's first female African-American mayor.
